Our apologies for the history museum part of the Old Red Barn. We are still in the process of putting all of the information and artifacts together. The Old Red Barn was originally built by Donald Broadfoot in the 1960's for use as a milking barn for cows. Its design was called a double four (4 cows to a side) herringbone milking parlor. The raised concrete section on the south side of the living room was where 4 cows at at time would walk up the concrete steps, thru the door and be milked as the ate grain that dropped down from the feed bins in the upper attic. There was another raised milking platform on the other side of the living room where the couch and kitchen are, which allowed 8 cows at a time to be milked. The farmer worked in the lower center part of the rooms, attaching milkers to each cow as they ate. Their manure was washed out thru the grating system in the floor, and when the cows were finished they went out the left-hand side, down the steps, out the doors and down the walkway to a holding pen. Where the 2 bedrooms and bath are, was the location of the milk-room, where the cows milk was cooled and stored. Donald bottled his own milk (the bottling machine is in the living room) in one gallon jars and delivered directly to his customers. We are in the process of restoring 1/2 of the original parlor and the equipment and appreciated your patience as we go.
